David Oldham

David Oldham

David Oldham is a writer, publisher, and technologist living in rural France. He writes about history, place, and the stories buildings and landscapes carry.

About

David Oldham grew up in Salford, Greater Manchester, and spent more than twenty years working in UK building regulations and energy assessment before turning to writing and publishing full-time. He now lives in Colombiers-du-Plessis, a small village in the Mayenne department of north-west France, with his wife and writing partner Helen. His work spans history, travel, cultural biography, and the built environment. "Walking in Their Footsteps: D-Day and the Ground They Fought On" draws on years spent walking the Normandy beaches and hedgerows, weaving present-day visits into the historical narrative of June 1944. "CHOKE: How a Handful of Narrow Waterways Control the Modern World" was written during the 2026 Strait of Hormuz crisis and sits alongside the geopolitical writing of Tim Marshall and Peter Zeihan. "From These Streets: Salfordians Who Changed the World" is a biographical portrait of fifty people from the city he grew up in. With Helen, he writes travel and touring books that explore the overlooked corners of France. "Stone & Story Trail: Sarthe" and "The River & The Owl: Touring Mayenne Through the Ages" are written on location, grounded in the places they describe and the people who shaped them. David is also the founder of D&H Publishing International Ltd, a membership publisher based in Covent Garden, London. Frustrated by the gap between expensive vanity presses and the complexity of DIY self-publishing, he built a suite of publishing tools and a service model that takes authors from manuscript to published book. He believes every book deserves professional production, and that authors should keep their rights and their royalties. He writes under several pen names across different genres. When he is not writing, he is usually walking, researching, or arguing with typesetting software.
