CHOKE

How a Handful of Narrow Waterways Control the Modern World

On the night of 28 February 2026, a radio broadcast in the Persian Gulf brought the global economy to its knees. When Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation for a devastating US-Israeli strike, the world discovered in real time just how fragile its prosperity really is. Oil surged past one hundred and twenty-six dollars a barrel. Fuel rationing spread across a dozen countries. Fertiliser shortages threatened harvests in Africa. And the most powerful navy in human history could not reopen a waterway barely twenty-one miles wide. In CHOKE, David G. Oldham takes readers on a sweeping journey through the narrow corridors of water, pipeline, and fibre-optic cable that quietly govern the fate of nations. From Leonidas at Thermopylae to the forced labourers who dug the Suez Canal, from Churchill's catastrophe at Gallipoli to the drone swarms that paralysed the Red Sea, Oldham shows how control of a handful of chokepoints has repeatedly decided the destiny of empires, and how it is doing so again today. Blending rigorous historical research with the immediacy of a crisis still unfolding, this book explains why geography, not technology, remains the ultimate arbiter of global power, and why the twenty-first century will be defined not by the mastery of open oceans but by the control of narrow gates. Urgent, meticulously reported, and unsettlingly timely, CHOKE is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the hidden architecture holding up the world we take for granted, and what happens the moment it fails.
  • ✦Opens with a real-time crisis so gripping you'll forget you're reading nonfiction
  • ✦Connects ancient battles like Thermopylae directly to tomorrow's headlines
  • ✦Reveals why twenty-one miles of water can bring the world economy to its knees

If you enjoyed Prisoners of Geography by Tim Marshall or The Revenge of Geography by Robert D. Kaplan, you will love this book, and readers of Peter Zeihan's The End of the World Is Just the Beginning or Chris Miller's Chip War will find the same blend of sharp geopolitical analysis and page-turning urgency that makes CHOKE impossible to put down.

The signal died at seven minutes past midnight. On the bridge of the Marshall Islands-flagged crude carrier Doha Star, three hundred and twenty metres of steel riding low in the Persian Gulf with two million barrels of Kuwaiti export blend in her tanks, Captain Mikhail Petrov watched the Automatic Identification System display flicker and resolve into something he had never seen in twenty-six years at sea: nothing. Where moments earlier the screen had shown the familiar crawl of tanker traffic converging on the Strait of Hormuz, the nightly procession of VLCCs and Suezmaxes and Aframaxes that carried a fifth of the world's oil supply through a gap of water narrower than the English Channel, there was now silence. No transponder signals. No course vectors. No ships. Petrov had sailed the Hormuz route hundreds of times. He knew its rhythms as well as he knew the sounds of his own ship: the slow convergence of traffic from the loading terminals at Ras Tanura, Mina al-Ahmadi, and Basra, the gentle curve of the two-mile-wide outbound shipping lane hugging the Omani side, the watchful presence of the grey-painted warships of the US Fifth Fleet maintaining station in the approaches. On a normal night, the AIS screen showed a dense, orderly procession of vessels, each separated by the mandated safe distance, each broadcasting its identity, course, speed, and destination to every other ship and every shore station within range. It was a choreography of enormous scale, repeated without interruption, day and night, year after year, carrying the energy that powered half the world's economies. Tonight, the choreography had stopped. It was 28 February 2026. Twelve hours earlier, the United States and Israel had launched a coordinated airstrike campaign against military and leadership targets across Iran. The strikes were massive in scope, hitting IRGC command centres, air defence installations, ballistic missile storage facilities, and government buildings in Tehran, Isfahan, and Shiraz. Among the targets was the compound of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic. Khamenei was killed in the strike, along with his daughter, son-in-law, grandchild, and daughter-in-law. The Iranian defence minister, Aziz Nasirzadeh, and IRGC commander Mohammad Pakpour were also killed. It was the most significant targeted killing of a head of state and senior military leadership since the Second World War, and its consequences would be felt within hours on every ocean and in every commodity market on earth. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had already issued its response: a barrage of retaliatory missile and drone strikes against American military bases across the Middle East, Israeli territory, and the Gulf states that hosted American forces. Explosions were reported in Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, and the UAE. The US embassy in Kuwait was struck and closed indefinitely. Hezbollah in Lebanon launched missiles toward Israel. Iraqi militias attacked American targets in Iraq and Jordan. The regional conflagration that Western and Middle Eastern planners had spent decades trying to prevent was underway. But the IRGC's most consequential act that night was not a missile launch. It was a radio broadcast.
